I can’t tell you how many times I’ve started a new health regimen, been SO pumped and motivated, then a few weeks later fall right back into my old routine. It’s a vicious cycle! So it got me thinking, why do I keep doing this? What is my biggest obstacle to overcome?
I realized a few things. One, I had cravings that I needed to eliminate. But cold turkey just wasn’t working for me! For example, soda (especially Coke!) has been my worst craving since, ever. I realized that it wasn’t necessarily the flavor (what IS Coke’s flavor anyway?!) but rather, it was the feel of the bubbles going down my throat. So how did I finally kick that craving? Well, I started out by drinking flavored sparkling water, until I discovered it had aspartame (along with other chemicals) in it, eek! I do not want to be putting that in my body. So instead, I started buying seltzer water and add it to healthy fresh juices to still get that bubbly sensation without feeling bad about it! That craving has now been eliminated! In fact, I was having a “cheat day” recently at my sister’s cookout, and had a few sips of Coke (don’t judge!) just to see if I really missed it, and I did not like it at ALL! My taste for it was completely GONE!
The second thing I realized, and probably the biggest and most important one, was that I wasn’t necessarily making bad food choices at home, but rather, at the grocery store! This changed everything for me. This made me rethink processed foods, candies, sweets, etc. In fact, I changed my whole shopping routine! (there will be a more specific blog post on that later). Once I realized this, I put more thought into my grocery trips. I always start at the produce section, grab as many fresh fruits and veggies as we can eat as a family, and only skim the cooking and baking aisle for staples (rice, pasta, bread, tortillas) then check out meat, and dairy sections! I completely skip the frozen section and processed foods sections (most of the time). That honestly changed everything for me, and I’m so glad I did it! We now snack better, eat better, and even seem to get more food out of it that way!
And finally, the last thing I realized (and maybe not the most popular ) was that restricting myself from anything was doing more harm than good! Instead I think to myself, “I can have that, but do I want it?” and the answer is usually no! (with things like potato chips and goldfish crackers, two things I always loved!) BUT a huge difference is that I will allow myself to have these things occasionally, if I really want them (which I actually typically don’t!) in moderation. The trick is to always find the healthiest option for it, or to do it super seldomly!
These may sound silly to a lot of people, but they all have completely changed my health and eating habits! I am so glad that I can FINALLY keep the healthy habits I’ve always wanted!
I hope this was helpful to you, and if you struggle like I did for many years, maybe now is the time to rethink your mindset!
